The concept and goals of sustainability
Sustainability is the ability of the facility or system to exist without negatively affecting the environment and its surroundings whether now or in the future.
This means that its economic, environmental, and societal costs must be calculated and its results should be positive.
At the same time, the system should be able to exist in the future with its sustainable positive impact on society. In case the system does not have a positive impact, it should not be a negative one. Sustainability includes the well-being of the land, air, and sea.
The main objective of “sustainability” is continuity in achieving people’s needs in a meaningful way and without depleting natural resources or harming any group of people or animals or environmental life close to the sustainable system. This system must be viable and profitable in case it is an economic project.
Sustainability requires governments and companies to take into their consideration the lives of those surrounding them, as well as the future; and not to focus only on profit. They must consider the sustainability of their projects in a way that does not affect the environment or society.
Sustainability is maintaining the quality of life by adapting to the environment by benefiting from natural resources for the longest possible period of time; thus, maintaining the continuity of life for future generations, and developing the means for its growth over time.
Sustainability has many goals, including the following: - Providing a range of solutions to maintain global food ratios. - Reducing poverty rates, and finding alternative means to treat economic crises that provide equal financial shares for individuals.
- Guaranteeing the provision of an inclusive and adequate education that maintains sustainability, through the new studies that provide ideas for adequate support for sustainability.
- Utilizing natural and industrial energy sources to provide materials based on them at reasonable prices, within the financial capabilities of people.
- Ensure the provision of a health sector capable of reducing the spread of diseases, and providing appropriate treatments to reduce global health crises.
- Achieving gender equality and accomplishing sustainable economic development at the same time while providing job opportunities and creating strong economies.
- Overcoming the effects of climate change, pollution, and other environmental factors that harm people’s health, lives, and livelihood.
