Amazon’s presence in Egypt reflects our long-term confidence in this country
AMAZON’S INVESTMENTS CONTRIBUTED MORE THAN EGP 29 BILLION TO EGYPT’S ECONOMY OVER THE PAST DECADE
Amazon’s investments have supported more than 60,000 direct, indirect, induced and seasonal jobs across the Egyptian economy, underscoring the company’s role as a long-term partner in the country’s growth
Amazon today announced that its investments have contributed more than EGP 29 billion to Egypt’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the past decade and supported more than 60,000 direct, indirect, induced and seasonal jobs across the country. According to analysis by the economic consultancy Keystone Strategy, the GDP contribution reflects Amazon’s cumulative investment in infrastructure, technology, logistics and employee compensation. The findings were unveiled at the Global Entrepreneurship Festival, the largest entrepreneurship event in Africa, held in Cairo under the auspices of the Prime Minister of Egypt, H.E. Dr. Mostafa Madbouly.
“Amazon’s presence in Egypt reflects our long-term confidence in this country and its people. Over the past decade, we have invested consistently in infrastructure, in technology, in logistics and in the tens of thousands of Egyptian businesses that grow and create jobs through Amazon. We have done so through periods of economic uncertainty because we believe in what Egypt can achieve. The figures we are sharing today are not just a measure of our investment. They reflect the ambition of Egyptian entrepreneurs, the resilience of local businesses and the talent of a workforce that continues to deliver. We are proud of what we have built here, and we intend to keep building,” said Omar Elsahy, General Manager, Amazon Egypt.
A decade of investment: Building a lasting economic footprint in Egypt
Since acquiring Souq.com in 2017 and launching Amazon.eg in 2021, Amazon has steadily deepened its presence in Egypt. According to estimates by Keystone Strategy, Amazon’s cumulative investment over the past decade has contributed more than EGP 29 billion to Egypt’s GDP spanning infrastructure, technology, logistics, and employee compensation.
Amazon’s presence has built a foundation of economic activity that reaches well beyond the company’s own operations. Investment at this level, maintained year after year, including through currency volatility and wider regional uncertainty, supports local supply chains, stimulates demand and creates the conditions for growth and employment across sectors such as logistics, technology and professional services.
More than 60,000 jobs supported across Egypt
Amazon’s impact extends well beyond its direct workforce. The more than 60,000 jobs supported over the past decade span direct, indirect, induced and seasonal roles across sectors including logistics, operations, technology and professional services from the teams in Amazon's fulfillment and logistics operations and its regional customer service center, to the suppliers, delivery partners and service providers that its presence sustains.
Beyond Amazon’s own operations, thousands of small and medium-sized Egyptian businesses sell and grow through Amazon, creating their own jobs, hiring their own teams and building livelihoods in communities across the country. Today, tens of thousands of Egyptian selling partners reach customers nationwide and around the world and the jobs and economic activity they generate are a critical part of Amazon’s wider impact on the Egyptian economy.
Expanding services, deepening local investment
The company has also continued to expand its services for customers, including Amazon Now, which delivers groceries, fresh produce sourced from local farmers and everyday household essentials within minutes through micro-fulfillment centers across the country. This sustained investment in infrastructure, technology and local businesses reinforces Amazon’s role as a long-term partner in Egypt’s growth and job-creation agenda.
What is next for Amazon in Egypt
Amazon remains committed to empowering entrepreneurs, supporting small and medium-sized businesses, and investing in the people, technology and infrastructure that help the Egyptian economy grow. As Egypt continues to prioritize private-sector investment, entrepreneurship and job creation, Amazon will keep building for the long term.
